Shopping for food and groceries

Updated: Apr 10, 2021

Most of our shopping for fresh food is done in an open market, or in the bigger cities people will use supermarkets. In this book I will talk about normal markets as the majority of Thai people use markets.

There are both temporary and permanent fresh food markets. In Thai, we call the temporary or "pop-up" markers, “Ta-lad-Nud”. This means that the stallholders will set up the stall to sell their stuff, usually in the grounds of a temple or in the open spaces. They normally start between 4 pm-7pm (evening market). This kind of market will have fresh meat, vegetables, cooked foods, clothes, hardware and the important supplies that households need. I love this kind of market, except when it is raining because that mean we all will get wet. If you have a chance to come to visit Thailand please do come and visit this kind of market. You will feel of real Thai people life.

The picture above shows people in countryside coming together at the market and shopping. It is also a good depiction of the simple way in which we live our life. For some of the people this is a treat for them as they can shop for new clothes and new stuff because this kind of market is not there every day. Some villages and towns have only one market a week. People also do food shopping in permanent markets which are set up by the District Administration Organization of that town or the owner of the market. This kind of market sells fresh meat, fish and vegetables as well as cooked food.

This picture shows a permanent market, or what Thai people call “ Ta-lad-sod”, you can find all sorts of ingredients for cooking here.
